Illyrian type helmet
Trebenishte necropolis, grave V
End of 6th c. BC

Illyrian type helmet made of a single sheet, with rectangular opening for the face. Two longitudinal ridges across the top and back part of the calotte and a pin on the forepart probably served to support a crest. On the frontal part, below the pin, it is decorated with a broad gold band with plait pattern in relief between rows of dots, delimited by two lines. On the band, two plaits with five circles each are depicted. The ornament is identical to that on the funerary mask and on the hand-shaped gold plate from Grave I. The decoration is hammered on a matrix. Along the entire edge of the helmet, there is a line of small holes with partially preserved rivets, delimited between relief borders. The cut between the cheek pieces and the neck guard is accentuated with a silver palmette-shaped applique, preserved on the left.

The artefact is part of the temporary exhibition “Trebenishte. 105 years since the discovery of the necropolis at Trebenishte. 1918 – 2023” and is on display in the Treasury Hall of the Museum until March 24, 2024.
