About the initiative

The Summer Academy for Children and School Students is a cultural and educational project of the National Academy of Art and St. Pimen Zografski Foundation at the National Academy of Art.  Over the ten years of its realization, the Summer Academy has established itself as a long-awaited event for young artists. Professors and students from different specialties at the Academy work with the participants. The organized classes create opportunities for acquiring basic knowledge and skills in the following areas: Academic; Experimenting; Plein Air; Visits to Museums and Galleries; Happenings. Participants (for free) in the SAfCSS editions are also disadvantaged children and adolescents with whom work students from the Master's program "Art Therapy".

This year the program of The Summer Academy for Children and School Students is dedicated to the Bulgarian Cultural Heritage. The Academy envisage creative workshops of art painting, ceramics, mosaics, felt, icon-painting, calligraphy, comics, design and animation as well as different activities in the Sofia’s urban spaces, museums and galleries. The children will create during the whole month of august and at the end their works will participate within an exhibition in the Academia Gallery.

Why we are participating?

The main task of National Archaeological Institute with Museum at the Bulgarian Academy of Sciences (NAIM-BAS) is the presenting of our collection in intelligible and intriguing way in front of our youngest visitors by stirring in them interest toward the rich Bulgarian cultural heritage. The partnership with the Summer Academy for Children and School Students at the National Academy of Art is part of our educational program performed in close collaboration and interaction with the museums in the country, national state institutions and nongovernmental organizations. In the present participation reflects our intention to transform the museum space into a place for entertainment, socialization, communication and education by presenting in front of the rising generation the prehistoric, thracian, late antique, medieval and ottoman culture of the South Eastern Balkans by means of innovative, interactive and non-traditional methods.

How we are participating?

With specialized talks and interactive media (educational films, electronic touch-screens) we are introducing the children to Archaeology and revealing in front of them the rich prehistoric culture of the Bulgarian lands and especially the pottery production during the New Stone Age, the Copper Age and the Bronze Age. The kids and the school students have the unique opportunity to communicate with the scientific specialists and to draw the exibits in Hall Prehistory – real pieces of the prehistoric art: richly decorated pottery vessels, anthropomorphic and zoomorphic figurines, models of heats, dwellings and temples.
