Temporary exhibition Time, Matter and Spirit. The Conservation in the National Archaeological Institute with Museum at the Bulgarian Academy of Sciences

12.10.2021

On October 14, 2021, Thursday, at 6 pm, the National Archaeological Institute with Museum at the Bulgarian Academy of Sciences (NAIM-BAS) will present a temporary exhibition Time, Matter and Spirit. The Conservation in the National Archaeological Institute with Museum at the Bulgarian Academy of Sciences.

The exhibition focuses on the contribution of conservators and other museum specialists who devoted their professional life to the preservation and conservation of our cultural and historical heritage already from the time of the “Museum of the people” to the present National Archaeological Museum. It is related to the desire of our team to pay attention to some significant professional activities, without which modern museology would have been impossible. The efforts of the conservators and museum specialists responsible for the content and condition of the depositories and the numerous cultural artefacts stored in them often remain unnoticed by the general public. The exhibition pays tribute to the work of individuals who had a leading role in the process of preservation of the Bulgarian cultural heritage since the museum's establishment.

Thanks to the INFRAMAT program, part of the National Roadmap for Research Infrastructure funded by the Ministry of Education and Science over the past three years, the museum has managed to modernize and improve its technological equipment and increase its scientific capacity.

In recent years, Laboratory for Analyses, Conservation and Restoration at NAIM-BAS has reestablished itself as a technological and research centre that provides expertise not only for the needs of NAIM-BAS but also for a number of regional, municipal and archaeological museums throughout the country. This process is evident by the participation in the exhibition of more than 200 artefacts from the depositories of 20 museums.

The exhibition Time, Matter and Spirit. The Conservation in the National Archaeological Institute with Museum at the Bulgarian Academy of Sciences is organized in partnership with 21 historical and archaeological museums throughout the country, which provide finds from their depositories. These are the regional archaeological museums in Varna and Plovdiv, the regional history museums in Vratsa, Kardzhali, Razgrad, Ruse, Silistra, Sliven, Sofia, Stara Zagora, Haskovo and Shumen, Archaeological museum “Veliki Preslav”, Archaeological Museum “Ancient Nessebar”, Ethnographic-archaeological museum Elhovo, MCI “Museum centre” Sozopol, History museum “Iskra” Kazanlak and the history museums in Popovo, Provadia, Svishtov and Sredets.

The realization of the exhibition is related to the activity of the National Archaeological Institute with Museum at the Bulgarian Academy of Sciences under the research project INFRAMAT and carried out with the support of the Bulgarian Academy of Sciences, the Ministry of Culture of Bulgaria, Glavbolgarstroy Holding AD and Dundee Precious Metals EAD. The exhibition is dedicated to the 100th anniversary of the establishment of the Bulgarian Archaeological Institute – the first Bulgarian scientific institute.

Time, Matter and Spirit. The Conservation at the National Archaeological Institute with Museum at the Bulgarian Academy of Sciences will be open to visitors from October 15, 2021, to January 30, 2022, in the Temporary Exhibitions Hall of NAIM-BAS on No 1 Atanas Burov Square.
