Public Lecture by Dr. Tomislav Bilić from the Archaeological Museum-Zagreb on the topic Between Archaeology, History, Tradition, and Change: Current Numismatic Research in Croatia.

27.10.2024

On Wednesday, November 6th, 2024, at 6 pm, in the National Archaeological Institute with Museum in Sofia, 1 Atanas Burov Sq. (opposite the Presidency Building), Dr. Tomislav Bilić from the Archaeological Museum-Zagreb will hold a lecture on numismatic research in Croatia as part of the Academic Seminar of NAIM-BAS.

Reflecting a more general trend in numismatic studies, Croatian numismatics seems to have arrived at a particular crossroad between the traditional academic approach and one more attentive to a dialogue with archaeology and anthropology. Two case studies presented here will exemplify this situation. The first, a presentation of the latest research in Iron-Age coins in southern Pannonia, will show how the models devised for similar circumstances can be applied to a local situation and advance the study of a regional phenomenon. The second will exemplify how an anthropological approach to Croatian monetary heritage can change a long-dominant paradigm by focusing on historical sources rather than preconceived opinions.

Tomislav Bilić works at the Archaeological Museum in Zagreb. He is currently the Head of the Numismatic Department and the deputy director of the Museum. Ηe studied at the Zagreb Faculty of Humanities and Social Sciences, where he obtained his BA in archaeology and history and Ph.D. in archaeology. He has authorized several books, book chapters, and papers published in international journals. His research interests are primarily Late Iron Age coinage, Greek and Roman numismatics (especially Roman Republican coinage), and coin circulation in southern Pannonia, but also classical mythology, geography, and astronomy. His latest book is Late Iron-Age Coins at the Archaeological Museum in Zagreb – a Study of ‘Celtic’ Coinage from Southern Pannonia (2024).

The lecture will be presented in English. It is organized within the frame of Croatian Archaeological Heritage Days at the National Archaeological Institute with Museum at the Bulgarian Academy of Sciences, November 6th - 8th, 2024.
