"The Western Gate of Serdica. Archaeological Excavations 2013" has been published
Publication on the subject of "The Western Gate of Serdica. Excavations 2013" has just come out. The authors Iliana Borisova-Katsarova, Andrey Aladzhov and Snezhana Goryanova present the results of the archaeological survey of the site Western Gate of Serdica conducted in 2013.
The new research was funded by Sofia Municipality under the Culture Programme. The excavations were conducted by a team consisting of Dr. Iliana Borisova-Katsarova, Chief Assistant (Sofia University "St. Kliment Ohridski"), Dr. Andrey Aladzhov, Chief Assistant (NAIM-BAS), Snezhana Goryanova (NAIM-BAS), Dr. Yordan Gatev, Chief Assistant (NAIM-BAS) and Dr. Alexander Stanev. Since the onset of the renewed excavations in 2011, the archaeological site Western Gate of Serdica gained great popularity in the public and scholar spheres and took its due place on the archaeological map of the modern city of Sofia.
The new discoveries, presented in the publication, confirm some of the observations made up to now, refine others and challenge some of the existing hypotheses about the life in Serdica in the Roman, Early Byzantine and Medieval periods. The large-scale archaeological excavations at the city of Sofia conducted in the last few years have shed light on some hitherto unknown aspects of the early history of Serdica.
