Exhibition “Do you know this game? Games and toys in Antiquity”

17.05.2014
For the first time the National Institute of Archaeology with Museum at the Bulgarian Academy of Sciences organizes an exhibition dedicated to the children’s games and toys in Antiquity. The exposition “Do you know this game? Games and toys in Antiquity” is part of the celebration of the 145th anniversary of the establishment of the Bulgarian Academy of Sciences and is organized in partnership with the American Research Center in Sofia.

The exhibition presents games and toys from the Classical, Hellenistic, and Roman periods, many of which are still popular in different parts of the world. Depictions on Attic painted pottery, the texts of the ancient authors as well as the actual toys discovered during excavations: rattles, dolls, knucklebones, and terracotta figurines represent the children’s world and games. On display are exhibits from the depositories of NIAM-BAS as well as from the museums in Sozopol, Nessabar, Varna, Veliko Tarnovo and Plovdiv.

The opening is on May 17th 2014 in the Hall for temporary exhibitions of the National Museum of Archaeology. The exhibition will be on display until August 24th, 2014.
