On November 11, 2014 Assoc. Prof. Dr. Bonny Petrunova, Deputy Director of NAIM-BAS and Head of the Department of Medieval Archaeology was appointed Deputy Minister of Culture.

Assoc. Prof. Dr. Petrunova has a master’s degree in history, Bulgarian language and literature, and archaeology from "St. Kliment Ohridski" Sofia University and earned a PhD in history in 1996 with a thesis entitled "Funerary rituals on the territory of Bulgaria from 15th to 17th century (based on data from Christian cemeteries)".

Assoc. Prof. Dr. Petrunova has been affiliated with the Department of Medieval Archaeology of NAIM-BAS since 1988. She specializes in the study of sites of the Late Medieval archaeology. She was supervisor of the excavations of many late antique, medieval and late medieval archaeological sites in Bulgaria. Assoc. Prof. Dr. Petrunova is a longtime researcher of the Kaliakra fortress, "Lyutitsa" fortress near the town of Ivaylovgrad, Urvich fortress near the village of Kokalyane and late antique fortress Peristera in the town of Peshtera. She is an author of many scholarly publications, including several monographs.
