Temporary exhibition “The sanctuary of the Thracian horseman at Lozen village”

Following a long-established tradition of support for cultural institutions in the country promoting our rich archaeological heritage, the National Archaeological Institute with Museum at the Bulgarian Academy of Sciences organizes in cooperation with the library board of Lozen village, Haskovo region, temporary exhibition entitled “The sanctuary of the Thracian horseman at Lozen village”.

The exhibition includes reliefs and statuettes of the most widely worshipped Thracian deity found in his largest sanctuary excavated at southeastern Bulgaria. The items are of Roman date, almost all dating from the 2nd and 3rd c. AD. They stand out in terms of some iconographic peculiarities to which there are no parallels in other places, as well as the epithet of the deity Geikesenos which is assumed to be the Thracian name of the locality, where the sanctuary was localized.
The exhibition is organized in connection with the celebration of the 90th anniversary of the establishment of “Prosveta” library club. It will be displayed in the shop of granddad Slavi built in the early 20th c., where the ethnographic collection of the village is housed. The exhibition opening coincides with the Easter celebrations and can be seen from April 11, 2015 until April 29, 2015. Curator of the exhibition is Dr. Krasimira Karadimitrova, Chief Assistant, from NAIM-BAS.
