“The restoration of the ceramic icon of St. Theodore” booklet has been published

“The restoration of the ceramic icon of St. Theodore” booklet is a bilingual edition in Bulgarian and English. It presents the restoration of the ceramic icon of St. Theodore Stratelates from the monastery in Patleina in Veliki Preslav, accomplished by a project with the financial support of the American Research Center in Sofia and the America for Bulgaria Foundation. The icon of St. Theodore is the oldest icon found in Bulgaria and is part of the permanent exhibition of NAIM at BAS. It is one of the most interesting and important exhibits displayed in the National Archaeological Museum. The icon relating to the Golden Age of Bulgarian medieval culture is a cultural value of national and global importance.

The project is realized in the Laboratory for Analyses, Conservation and Restoration of NAIM at BAS by a team composed of: Dr. Daniela Cherneva, restorer, Sevdalina Neykova, Laboratory for Analyses, Conservation and Restoration of NAIM at BAS and PhD student at Technical University of Munich and Prof. Ivana Eneva, National Academy of Art.

The booklet consisting of 28 pages presents the history of the cultural value, the ceramic icons of Preslav dated to 9th – 10th c., technological and artistic qualities of the icon, as well as the life and iconography of St. Theodore Tyron and St. Theodore Stratelates. The icon restoration method is also thoroughly described in the booklet. 

Compilers and authors of the booklet are Daniela Cherneva, Sevdalina Neykova, Ivana Eneva and Laura Bumbalova.
