Exhibit of the month – December 2023
Goblets. Silver, gold.
Trebenishte necropolis, grave VIII
Late 6th c. BC
National Museum of Belgrade
These tall, cylindrical cups are among the inventory of one of the richest graves in the necropolis. The grave offerings include also gold masks, sandal-shaped lamellae, a gilded bronze helmet, a gilded silver rhyton, bracelets, rings, amber and glass beads, ceramic amphora, bronze krater, etc. Below the rim and above the foot, there are applied bands of gilded decoration with floral and tongue motifs. Part of a luxurious banquet set, these silver goblets are undoubtedly a sign of the high social status of the deceased.
The artefacts are part of the temporary exhibition “Trebenishte. 105 years since the discovery of the necropolis at Trebenishte. 1918 – 2023” which is on display in the Treasury Hall of the National Archaeological Museum until March 24, 2024.
