The National Archaeological Institute with Museum at the Bulgarian Academy of Sciences participates at the European Archaeology Days 2024

On 14th – 16th June 2024 we celebrate the European Archaeology Days (EAD): a weekend dedicated to archaeology in all its forms.

In order the attention and the curiosity of the general public to be attracted toward the various aspects of the complicated and multifaceted academic discipline of Archaeology, many European countries envisage the organization of events aimed at engaging families, schools, students, history enthusiasts, museum visitors, as well as merely curious participants. The European Archaeology Days aim at sharing archaeological heritage throughout Europe and making culture accessible to all. Originally, several events were planned: visits to archaeological sites usually closed to the public, meetings with archaeology professionals opening up to the public about their profession, a range of entertaining and educational activities, cultural walks in the city or countryside, and many more.

About the organization and the participants

Since 2008, the French Ministry of Culture has been entrusting the National Institute for Preventive Archaeological Research (INRAP) with the coordination and promotion of National Archaeology Days (JNA). In 2019, 1,600 events will have reached 220,000 people in 515 municipalities in metropolitan France and overseas territories and in 663 locations. More than 500 organizers were mobilized, and nearly 150,000 visits were made to the dedicated website during the event. The JNA expanded to include all of Europe in 2019. For the first time, seventeen countries participated. In 2020, France’s National Archaeology Days will become the European Archaeology Days - https://journees-archeologie.fr/c-2020/lg-en/Other-countries/Home

Why we are participating?

The main goal of National Archaeological Institute with Museum at the Bulgarian Academy of Sciences (NAIM-BAS) is the complete study of the culture of tribes and peoples who have occupied present day Bulgaria from the remote past until the 18th century and the promotion of the Bulgarian cultural heritage. The present participation at the European Archaeology Days is an inseparable part from our scientific and promotional activity performed in close collaboration and interaction with the museums in the country and abroad, national and foreign state institutions, and various nongovernmental organizations. In our participation reflects the goal to transform the museum space into a place for entertainment, socialization, communication, and education by representing in front of the international public to the prehistoric, Thracian, late antique, medieval, and Ottoman culture of the South Eastern Balkans by means of innovative, interactive and non-traditional methods.

What we are representing?

Within the European Archaeology Days NAIM-BAS represents digital resources with free access.

The three-dimensional virtual tour (http://naim.bg/bg/content/news/600/857/1006/) is created from the team of NAIM-BAS and computer specialists from the company Revival Design. It includes the exponents from our permanent exposition allocated at our four main halls (Prehistory Hall, Vault, Central Hall, Middle Ages Hall), and our gallery with Eastern Orthodox icons (14th–18th centuries).

The Museum presents as well digital tours of the most interesting recent temporary exhibitions: „Stream Through Time“ (https://my.matterport.com/show/?m=ekKs6bA3s2d), „130 Years National Archaeological Museum“ (https://my.matterport.com/show/?m=U1Ww6UmTqWP), „The Panoply of the Thracian Warriors“ (https://my.matterport.com/show/?m=ysmbFRkP62J), „Trebenishte. 105 Years from the Discovery of the Necropolis“ (https://my.matterport.com/show/?m=zviHr1in5E7), and „Българска Археология 2023“ (https://my.matterport.com/show/?m=TSXx7SaVVoY).
