Public Lecture and workshop by the managing photographer and the imaging specialist, Yosi Pozeilov from the Los Angeles County Museum of Art, on Using Multiband Imaging for the Study of Antiquities

On Friday, September 19th, 2025, at 2 pm, in the National Archaeological Institute with Museum in Sofia, 1 Atanas Burov Sq. (opposite the Presidency Building), The photographer and the imaging specialist, Yosi Pozeilov from the Conservation Center at LACMA (Los Angeles County Museum of Art), will give a lecture in English on Using Multiband Imaging for the Study of Antiquities. The lecture will be combined with a workshop.

Multiband imaging has become an indispensable tool in the study of antiquities, offering a noninvasive approach that reveals complementary details during the initial examination of artifacts. In addition to facilitating close observation, multiband imaging plays a pivotal role in guiding scientific and analytical analyses. It aids in identifying pigments, understanding artistic processes, and detecting modern interventions. These techniques enable visualization across regions of the electromagnetic spectrum that are imperceptible to the naked eye.

This presentation aims to deepen understanding of the key components of imaging systems, including capture devices, radiation sources, and filters. By fostering a more comprehensive understanding of these elements, researchers can make informed decisions regarding equipment combinations to optimize multiband imaging techniques.

Yosi Pozeilov joined the Los Angeles County Museum of Art (LACMA), Conservation Center as the Senior Conservation Photographer in 2003 and currently holds the Managing Photographer and Imaging Specialist title. He oversaw converting the conservation photographic studio from film to a complete digital workflow; this digital implementation has encompassed all aspects of imaging and documentation at the center. In 2004 the American Institute of Conservation (AIC) invited him to teach his first workshop on digital photography for conservation at their annual meeting, since then, Yosi has continued to teach at different venues and programs like the UCLA/Getty Conservation Program, among others. Besides doing all the technical and scientific imaging for the conservation center, most recently at LACMA, Yosi has been implementing computational imaging techniques like Reflectance Transformation Imaging (RTI), photogrammetry, broadband and spectral imaging. He also established protocols to streamline condition reporting, implementing image-based condition reporting with the use of mobile technology and imaging-based systems on tablets.

The event is organized with the support of Modern Scientific Equipment in Support of Science, Technology, and Culture – INFRAMAT.
