64th National Archaeological Conference (May 26th – 30th 2026, Ruse, Bulgaria)

From 26 to 30 May 2026, the 64th National Archaeological Conference was held in Ruse, organized by the National Archaeological Institute with Museum at the Bulgarian Academy of Sciences and the Regional Museum of History–Ruse.

The main scientific programme took place on 27–29 May and included opening lectures devoted to archaeological research in the Ruse region, presentations of the most significant archaeological investigations conducted in Bulgaria in 2025, and a special panel featuring papers on the Danube Limes in Bulgaria, Croatia, Serbia, and Romania.

The conference brought together established Bulgarian archaeologists and specialists from museums, research institutions, and universities throughout the country, as well as guests and researchers from Romania, Serbia, Croatia, Austria, Germany, Slovakia, and Scotland.

As part of the conference, two exhibitions were opened: “Sixty Ships: Fifty Years of Archaeological Research at Sexaginta Prista” at the Regional Museum of History–Ruse, and the poster exhibition “Frontiers of the Roman Empire – Danube Limes (Eastern Segment)” at Grand Hotel Riga.

During the conference, a working meeting was also held in connection with the nomination for the extension of the UNESCO World Heritage site “Frontiers of the Roman Empire–Danube Limes” across the territories of Bulgaria, Croatia, Serbia, and Romania.

On 30 May, participants had the opportunity to visit the Roman Market at Sexaginta Prista, as well as the Rock-Hewn Churches of Ivanovo and the medieval town of Cherven.
