Public lecture by Prof. Dr. Barbara Horejs, Institute for Oriental and European Archaeology (OREA) of the Austrian Academy of Sciences

The National Archaeological Institute with Museum (NAIM-BAS) is pleased to invite you to a public lecture by Prof. Dr. Barbara Horejs, Institute for Oriental and European Archaeology (OREA) of the Austrian Academy of Sciences.

The lecture titled “Çukuriçi Höyük from 7th to 3rd millennium BC. Aspects from Neolithic colonization to intensive metallurgy in different millennia“ will be held in the Board Hall of NAIM-BAS, Sofia, 1 Atanas Burov Square (opposite the Bulgarian presidency building) on 27 October, 2016 (Thursday) at 5.00 pm.

The case study of Çukuriçi Höyük at the central Aegean coast of Western Anatolia offers a diachronic perspective from the Neolithic to Early Bronze Age (7th to 3rd millennium BC) at one particular site. Interpreting relations of regions in this Aegean-Anatolian interface requires discussion of local and regional developments on the one hand, as well as origins of ideas or even people on the other hand, to understand its connectivity trough times.

The tell allows us to scrutinise common cultural attributions as “Aegean” or “Anatolian” in different periods. Çukuriçi Höyük has been excavated and studied between 2007 and 2014 within several international projects, at least within the ERC project Prehistoric Anatolia, finished recently. This lecture will mainly focus on the founding horizon in early Neolithic time (6700 calBC) and its latest developments into a metallurgical centre in Early Bronze Age 1 period (2900–2750 calBC).

Since 2013 Prof. Horejs is Director of the Institute for Oriental and European Archaeology (OREA) of the Austrian Academy of Sciences. More information about her can be found here.
